Hakan Akkaya brings Bravery to NYFW A/W 2020

We, at TRA, have always loved the blaten confidence of Turkish designer Hakan Akkaya.  His runway is always creative and thought provoking.  This season during his New York Fashion week Fall/Winter 2020 we also got to see as a designer just how warm he is as well.  This season Hakan is attracting all the attention of femicide, justice, revolt and equality with “The Amish Punks.”

Hakan dedicated this season’s collection to the strong women who stand against violence. In his vision this collection reflects what happens when the Amish sect, who turn their backs to the Modern Age, merge styles with Punk subculture. Those strong women he referenced include The goddess “Justice”, the style of the Amish, feminine freedom and power from Las Tesis(the Chilean feminist song of protest), and the elegance of the anarchist punk movement.  All of this packed into 40 runway looks.

In the last 30 days Hakan had shown his collection in Turkey then traveled to New York to not only present his own show but also take part in the Turkish group shows.  Hakan explained his schedule through both excitement and exhaustion during our backstage pre-show interview.  The excitement stemming from the “bravery” behind this season’s collection.  The ability to give freedom through fashion when it may not exist otherwise.
