Gypsy Sport
Fun, Funky and Free can best describe the world of Gypsy Sport by creative director Rio Uribe. This season’s roof top Manhattan presentation at The Delancey gave guests an urban, tropical and elusive setting for the designers Spring 2020 NYFW runway showing. The setting matched in perfectly with the brands bold floral, varsity-inspired sportswear, and animal print. Boasting the production of gender less ready to wear clothing Uribe has set a specific tone in the fashion world and it hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Having one heck of a pre-entrepreneur resume, Uribe started his career in the industry via the merchandising team at Balenciaga just one year after making the move from L.A.’s Koreatown to New York. After spending 6 years working traveling to and from Paris to conduct photo shoots and runway shows Uribe launched Gypsy Sport in 2012. The following year the brand was sought after by Donna Karan for a DKNY collaboration and it almost seems that the rest is history.
While no designer has an easy road Rio has kept his vision steady; pieces that defy gender, size, race and age. To carry out that vision this season Uribe sought the help of casting director Anthony Conti. As a result we saw some of the industries biggest personalities, including Hennessy Carolina sister of Cardi B and West Dakota wearing what Rio calls “Genderfull” clothing. Then ever so often a model will peak through the palms in head to toe blue body paint and glitter giving us much skin and exclaming Rio’s fashion fluid mantra. Click here for our full runway coverage
