Marrisa Wilson

We journeyed to New York Fashion Week and while this season it looked nothing like it normally does, light had an opportunity to shine where it was really needed. Women are to be honored, cherished and respected for the endless contributions they give to the world.  Specifically, for women in fashion. Even more specifically, for women of color in fashion.  In a showroom, curated by The Black in Fashion Council and Img Showroom we had the opportunity to experience Marrisa Wilson NY’s Fall 2021 Collection, “To be black and female”.

To be black in America is to always deal with that two-ness— “two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder.” And to be a black woman is to deal with a certain triple-consciousness— a constant monitoring of our existence that informs how we navigate our lives.

The New Jersey born beauty of Guyanese heritage welcomed our TRA team with a smile and in depth tour of this season's Harlem Renaissance inspired movement of Black America in the 1920s.  Leading in the mood of the legendary Cotton club of Harlem her collection is seamless, passionate and impeccably tailored.  It is the work of a talented woman but even more the work of a talented artist.  One that cares to pay homage to history, while in moments it be painful but enforces that in truth there is true power. This truth doesn’t require approval; it is here for us to acknowledge and feel.

We invite you to experience this along with Marrisa and her offerings of bold colors, easy to wear designs, printed velvet and bold fabrics.
