Kate Barton

American designer Kate Burton brought both sophistication and elegance to this season's New York Fashion Week via the runway of Flying Solo. On a manhattan rooftop models donned her evening wear and pre-show the blue eyed beauty and myself chatted about her hometown of Kansas City, football, and her mission to bring awareness to those suffering from Cystic fibrosis. Last summer Kate lost her dear friend at the age of 24.  This year Kate aims to honor her whilst giving a deeper meaning to her garments.  Her actions to honor her didn’t just come through emotions and memory but also physical elements within her garment.  While in our TRA red carpet interview Kate showed our team an engraved strap with “mission for a cure” one of many subtle tributes the collection has.

In her last year to obtain her Masters, Kate is currently attending Savannah College of Art and Design.  Balancing what you can imagine to be a very busy career and creative time Kate seems to have a great handle on what she wants and where she is going. The same level of balance can be seen in her design technique. The brand has a great focus on innovation techniques like fabric manipulation cutting methods and acrylic thermoforming combined with unconventional material combinations and large silhouettes. It really does all come together well.  Feminine, soft, commanding and yet still very wearable.  No wonder she was chosen as the winner of Christian Siriano’s Live Red Carpet event showcasing young designers.

While this may be a lot to take in upon your introduction to the brand, Kate is already brewing an expansion into accessories, shoes and ready to wear pieces.  We say, give her a follow you may blink and miss something!
