Melissa Yin NYFW F/W 2018
Some fabrics are used for certain things due to their molecular make up. Cotton is great for breathability. Wool for it’s warm and moisture wicking. Silk for strength and its desired feeling next to the skin. But its leather, arguably the most durable of them all, but also the most appealing to the eye. Leather, leather, leather and more leather is what we were treated to during Melissa Yin’s New York Fashion Week show. Designing in leather gave her the ability to exert strength and staying power in each one of her creations. One really cool thing about using leather, is that due to its sturdy nature, there is little to no stretching, which means zippers and belts are necessary. Melissa took full of advantage of this byproduct of leather usage and incorporated them into her garments in both traditional and contemporary ways. Perhaps the most difficult thing about designing leather pieces for females, is to maintain a feminine look without looking masculine. This is no minor challenge to accomplish, but every pair of pants, dress, skirt and jacket was all woman. A task that we are all glad Melissa Yin chose to tackle. Her hard work and creative mind made for a show that we were all glad to be in attendance. We can’t wait to see what she has in store for next season.
