Laurence & Chico 2018 NYFW Presentation
Design partners Laurence Li and Chico Wang go together like yin and yang for their womenswear and accessories brand Laurence & Chico. This season the design duo held an upscale high fashion presentation for their collection during New York Fashion Week: The Shows. The event drew fashion celebs such as Miss J Alexander and America’s Next Top Model Photographer Nigel Barker. Staged at Pier 59, Laurence & Chico mixed Fashion with whimsical in such a way that makes the brand wearable but lets their buyers know they can stretch any fantasy they choose even if it is just a trip to the grocery store.
After graduating Parsons School of design Li and Wang created the brand name. If we are talking about humble beginnings, we can pay tribute to the pair setting up a small shop across from Designer Miu Miu in soho where they sold Li’s illustrations on postcards. Seeing people embrace their style and selling over $1000 worth their first day, they made their way to printing the illustrations on t-shirts. Li, outside of school maintained a illustrative journal with artwork of himself and Li as different characters. You can see this design style to this day very present in their collection, also including family members and friends as different characters as well.
Their current collection boats embroidered denim, silk and pearl embellishments and over the top accessories, all while giving a broad showcase of separates, dresses and outerwear. The designers love color and the use of costuming and spectators tend to be seen in the same. Attending a Laurence & Chico presentation, we at TRA very quickly learned that it is just as much fun meeting the people attending that love their brand, as it is witnessing the brand first hand! After three years we are looking forward to the color and creativity of next season!
