Aguamiel Swimwear Exclusive Designer Interview
Collection: Aguamiel Swimwear
Show: DCSW, The French Embassy 7/29/17
What's your name and where is your brand from?
I am Laura and my brand is from Mexico City. The brand is called Aguamiel and it is mainly made in Cuernavaca, Mexico. All the pieces today are handmade. We took some handmade pieces from different communities in Mexico that we work hand in hand with.
Growing up was there someone in your family into fashion or did this come about as an adult?
Well my mom was into fashion, she studied both sewing and seamstress. I always looked up to her, she made all of her dresses and I loved it. I attended a fashion school in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
Is this your first time showing at D.C. Swim Week?
Yes. This is our first time being international, however, we have shown our collection in Cuernavaca, Mexico. This is a brand that has only been around for about a year and a half. We are so excited to be here.
Do you only design swimwear or do you also have a fall/winter collection?
Right now we are focusing on swimwear and resort clothing.
What is some advice you would give to an aspiring fashion designer?
Don't give up and don't let anyone tell you you can't do it. Yes it is hard and sometimes you may get into difficult situations, but if you really want it and your passionate you will get through it. It's not easy but if you want it you should work for it and you will get it.
What inspired your collection this season?
It's very Mexican. You will see some pinks, a lot of reds, and also some of the prints are inspired by ponchos from Oaxaca, Mexico.
