Designer Interview with El Voyage

Collection Name: El Voyage

Upcoming Show: Nolcha Show NYFW

Why did you choose designing as a career?

Since I can remember, I love looking at Vogue and any other magazine with clothing, to inspire me and translate that into my looks within my limited closet. I come from a humble back ground so there wasn’t much hanging in my closet.  I love style not fashion, and working in fashion industry became my dream, but through time I knew, that understanding business would allow me both, work in the industry I dreamed off and travel.

Growing up, was there anyone in your family who made you feel like designing?

My great grand-mother was sweet, wise and stylish. A delicate woman with a super small waist, hair pulled back always put together but strong and independent. Her pieces were few and classic.  I hope to be some day, like her. She was strong character, beautiful, elegant and full of grace.  A woman who taught me so much in the little time we spent together. She inspired me!

What were your inspirations for the designs you are creating for the Nolcha Shows Fashion Media Lounge?

Island life, the hue of blues of the sky and ocean...I love the beach and being a New Yorker it’s interesting to see what happens when you let go of the black and greys. I wanted to translate this fabulous environment and color array into a palette, a world citizen can wear at any given time and place.

Do you consider the environmental effects of the colors and prints you choose for your collection?

Absolutely, when working with the community we question: where does wastage go? Are we replanting the plants used for natural dying? Where are the yarns coming from? After working for more than 16 years in the industry with mega companies I like to be aware, and help the environment as much as possible. At EL VOYAGE, we work collaborative from concept to delivery to improve the PLC (product life cycle) as much as we can improve.

What markets and demographic do you cater to?

We sell in US, Canada and UK. EL VOYAGE caters to a person that loves quality in life and wants to experience excellence every day, a world citizen.  Open minded to new cultures, the art of living and giving is for someone that feels they belong, and the world is their playground. I have lived in several countries and my favorite thing in this planet is to travel and connect with people around the globe. That is my wealth! Such is our consumer, the one that understand beauty, excellence, and loves art therefore can appreciate each piece of EL VOYAGE.

How has your personal history influenced your views on fashion?

Coming from a humble back ground and being obsess with style, was not an easy combination. How do you look fabulous and look like the models in magazines with no budget? hmmm not very feasible... Well Fashion and style NOT the same. I love timeless, special, pieces that speak to me.  It sounds cucu but it’s true. When I see a piece that I must have, I buy it… 10 years later I’m still wearing it, and people are still asking where did you get it? I feel the same way when designing pieces for EL VOYAGE. EL VOYAGE it’s about beauty, quality and timeless pieces. We try an capture a bit of art in each piece, so when you fall in love and buy it, you make it your own voyage.

What advice would you give to aspiring designers?

Love what you do

Belief in yourself

Understand your market

And never stop...
